Building & Code Enforcement

Our department is responsible for effectively administering the State of Michigan Building Codes and the Ordinances of the City of Linden in order to ensure public health, safety, and welfare within our city limits.

Our department processes building permit applications, but separate applications from the State of Michigan must be completed for plumbing, mechanical, and electrical work permits. The City of Linden does not process these types of applications or perform inspections for this work.

Per Chapter 15.08 of the City of Linden Municipal Code, the City requires a housing inspection to be done on all homes being sold within the City limits. This inspection must be completed before the sale of the property and is conducted by the Building Official. The housing inspection is a way to close expired or open building permits, and check for health and safety violations. If violations are found, a waiver can be signed by the seller and buyer, making the buyer responsible for repairs that may be required. The inspection fee is $45 and covers the initial inspection and a follow up inspection, if corrections are required.  Inspection appointments can be scheduled at City Hall, where the fee must be paid before an inspection can be completed.
