Lindenwood Neighborhood Improvement Project- Update Twelve
Unfortunately, the sudden change in weather has closed the window for asphalt paving this season. We were informed today that roadway paving operations have been suspended until next spring. In order for residents to have access to their driveways, the contractor will be installing temporary asphalt ramps in the areas with base pavements, and temporary dirt ramps in the areas without pavement. In addition to the temporary ramps for driveways, the contractor will also be installing ramps around the exposed utility covers located in the roadway. In the coming days, the contractor will be reinstalling mailboxes that were moved during construction so that mail delivery can return to normal. Final paving, landscape restoration, sign replacements, and other detailed work will be completed in the spring. If you have questions or issues that you believe need to be addressed prior to the contractor
2024 LINDENWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD IMPROVEMENTS PLAN SET
The project has been designed and awarded, and the SAD process has been completed. Construction on W. Rolston is expected to begin Spring 2025.
For years, city staff, various committees and residents have discussed the importance of preservation of the Linden Mill Building. Despite the good intentions and a deep desire to accomplish the goal, the lack of funding prevented the project from moving forward. Fortunately, the city recently received financial assistance from the State of Michigan which will allow the preservation to begin. As soon as the financial assistance was announced, city staff began to assemble and consult the necessary experts to determine the highest and best use for the Mill. This exercise is crucial for the long-term maintenance of the Mill Building, so that it doesn’t remain in the same deterioration cycle moving into the future. Once financing was received, the city assembled a small construction committee to facilitate the transition from studies and discussions to the actual work of preserving the Mill Building. The committee directed staff to solicit bids from suitable architectural firms to help us identify and design a sustainable plan forward. The bids for architectural services were solicited through the MITN online system this past June. As part of the solicitation process, staff provided interested architectural firms with the opportunity to walk through the Mill and visit the surrounding area. Representatives from 12 firms walked through the Mill as part of a mandatory site visit to determine their interest in the project. On June 28, 2024, the city received three bids from interested architectural firms for the Mill project.
The proposals from each firm were reviewed by the construction committee and interviews were conducted to determine which firm would be the best fit for the Mill Building Project. Following those interviews, the committee unanimously agreed to recommend H2A as our architectural partner. During the July 22, 2024 meeting, City Council approved H2A Architects for the project. H2A provides several elements that the committee considers vital to the partnership. The committee was impressed with H2A’s interoffice flexibility and promptness. They also shared their firm’s ability to engage the services of various high-level experts for prompt and in-depth consultation for anticipated and unanticipated challenges. Additionally, the assigned Mill Building Project Manager for H2A has previously worked on projects in the City of Linden and has already established a feel for the community. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the committee was won over by H2A’s pure passion for the preservation of historic buildings.
